Think TvTropes would be upset if I went through and changed every usage of ‘Roget’ to ‘Roger’ in the Arc V section? Cause I mean, I know that’s one way to translate(according to the wiki) it but like, no one calls him that. Like ever. It’s Jean or Roger.
And I know it’s stupid but it bugs me. Like, who honestly calls him Roget? I’ve never seen anyone call him that except TvTropes.
The official Japanese site spells his surname as “Roget”. Additionally, Roger isn’t even a real French surname, and even if it was, it’d be most likely pronounced “rojeru” in the original version instead of “roje”. Also, it was me whom edited that page in the first place.
Which is where my confusion stems from, are we using official spellings or not? Because if we are, then why is tvtropes using Yuri/Yuto/Yugo since the ‘official spellings are Joeri Ute, Hugo.
Clearly official spellings don’t matter if we’re going to use those names, so why bother changing Roger’s name?
In this case, it’d make a bigger difference since the pronounciation, as I stated before, would be completely different. People use the literal romanization of the other Yuu’s name to better follow the theme naming (same with Reiji and Reira aka Layra), and as a reference to all YGO protagonist having a “Yuu” on their names, but in Roget’s case, for some reason, fans translated his name completely wrong from the very beginning - you can’t even argue it’s a case of sticking to the Japanese rendition of his name, since the kana clearly indicate there shouldn’t be an “r” sound at the end of his name at all. It’s just a case of fan translators being ignorant about the French language and culture :P
Roger is an actual name and surname, this last ‘r’ is silent in french. I guess it’s just more common as a firstname.*shrugs*
For a few exemples of people having this surname:
- Pope Gregory IX or Pierre Roger de Beaufort
- Jacques-François Roger(a baron)
- Marie-Sabine Roger(french writer)
